02-01-2020

Embarking on a new day of my Bali adventure, I had grand plans to delve into the beauty of waterfalls and immerse myself in the rich tapestry of Balinese culture. With the sun barely touching the sky, my driver arrived at the Palm Beach Resort at 9 am, signaling the commencement of a day filled with exploration and wonder.

Mengwi Temple - Taman Ayun Temple

Our first stop led us to the Mengwi district, home to the enchanting Taman Ayun Temple, also known as Mengwi Temple. A royal temple of the Mengwi empire, its expansive compound with water features has earned it recognition on the television program “Around the World in 80 Gardens.” As I marveled at the intricate beauty, a chance encounter with vacationing policemen from Bangalore added a unique twist. Their unintentional photo-bombing became a story of camaraderie, with my revelation in Tamil about my role as a travel agent diffusing any annoyance.

Wanagiri Hidden Hill - Instagram's Delight

Nestled in the highlands of Munduk village in the Sukasada district, Wanagiri Hidden Hills emerges as a celestial gem in Bali’s diverse landscape. As I embarked on this journey, the anticipation of uncovering Instagram-famous photo spots with breathtaking views of Lake Buyan added an extra layer of excitement.

The drive from Kuta to Wanagiri Hidden Hills, perched on the main road of Bedugul, offered a scenic 2 ½-hour voyage through Bali’s enchanting terrain. The lush surroundings and winding roads painted a picturesque canvas, heightening the sense of anticipation for what lay ahead.

As I arrived at Wanagiri Hidden Hills, the significance of its name became evident. “Wana” translates to forest, and “Giri” to hill, perfectly encapsulating the essence of this hidden gem – the hill of a forest. The entrance, marked by a modest fee of 100K IDR, opened the door to a realm of visual delights.

A Symphony of Photo Spots:

Wanagiri Hidden Hills welcomes visitors with an array of captivating photo spots strategically positioned to showcase the mesmerizing views of Lake Buyan. Each platform, carefully designed and placed, adds a unique touch to the visual narrative.

  1. Bali Swing Facing the Lake: The iconic Bali Swing, set against the backdrop of Lake Buyan, invites adventurers to soar above the forested landscape. With each gentle swing, a sense of liberation and connection to nature unfolds.
  2. Human-Size Bird’s Nest: A whimsical touch to the landscape, the human-size bird’s nest offers a cozy spot for couples and solo travelers alike. Perched high, it provides an immersive experience, allowing visitors to become part of the picturesque panorama.
  3. Wooden Swing and Handshape Nest: Wanagiri Hidden Hills takes creativity to new heights with a wooden swing and hand-shaped nest. These artfully crafted installations not only serve as delightful photo props but also seamlessly integrate with the natural surroundings.
  4. Sparrow Nest and Beyond: The exploration continues with attractions like the sparrow nest, inviting visitors to capture moments of joy and playfulness amidst the tranquil beauty of Lake Buyan. Each platform, a testament to creativity, adds to the allure of Wanagiri Hidden Hills.

The Tale of Twin Lakes:

Lake Buyan and Tamblingan, gracefully separated by a rainforest-covered hill, stand as twin lakes nestled within a large caldera, offering a panoramic view of Bali’s volcanic heart. The narrow canal connecting Lake Buyan to a pool creates a seamless flow between these celestial bodies of water.

Wanagiri Hidden Hills becomes a gateway to the extraordinary tale of these twin lakes, where nature unfolds its mystique. The ethereal connection between forested hills and reflective waters enhances the allure, creating an immersive experience for every wanderer.

As I observed couples capturing their romantic moments against this enchanting backdrop, I couldn’t help but feel the palpable romance that Wanagiri Hidden Hills exudes. Each click immortalizes not just a photograph but a memory woven into the very fabric of Bali’s natural grandeur.

In the heart of Wanagiri Hidden Hills, where forest meets hill and lake meets sky, Bali reveals itself as a canvas of perpetual beauty. The journey through this hidden gem becomes a visual symphony, resonating with the spirit of exploration and the timeless charm of the Island of the Gods.

Banyumala Waterfall - A Natural Paradise

My journey continued to the mesmerizing Banyumala Waterfall, a hidden gem in the north of Bali. The trek through the jungle revealed the twin waterfalls, a natural paradise surrounded by lush greenery. Prepared with my swimsuit, I embraced the cool plunge pool, offering a refreshing respite from Bali’s tropical heat. The cascading waters and serene surroundings made it a moment to cherish.

Best Time to Visit and Tips:

  • Year-round visits are possible, but caution is advised during the rainy season.
  • The water can be cold, offering a refreshing swim in Bali’s heat.
  • Wear proper footwear for the hike.
  • If on a scooter, prioritize safety with a helmet.

Handara Gate - Instagram's Icon

The iconic Handara Gate, a famous Instagram spot, marked my next destination. Serving as the entrance to a golf resort, this Hindu gate symbolizes the transition from the outer world, echoing Bali’s rich cultural significance. The lush green mountains and a rainforest formed a dramatic backdrop, drawing photography enthusiasts. The entrance fee, though introduced due to its popularity, proved a small price for capturing memories against this captivating backdrop.

Ulandanu or Bedugul Temple - A Spiritual Retreat

Ulan Danu Temple, situated on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul, dedicated to Lord Shiva, embraced me with its spiritual aura. The intricate compound, adorned with split gates and pagoda-style shrines, unfolded the essence of Balinese Hinduism.

As I explored the complex, Indonesian school kids eagerly sought selfies, turning a simple visit into a joyous celebration. The warmth and laughter shared in those moments became a cherished memory.

Balinese Traditional Dress - A Cultural Encounter

The day concluded with a cultural encounter as my driver suggested buying a traditional Balinese dress. Opting for a white kebaya with a black corset, a black and white striped kamben, and a plain yellow sarong, I embraced the rich tapestry of Balinese attire. The diversity of traditional dress, laden with cultural nuances, highlighted the intricate history and social structure embedded in every fabric.

About Balinese Traditional Dress:

  • For Women: White or colorful kebaya paired with a batik kamben, flowers in their hair.
  • For Men: White shirts with batik or songket kamben, a sash, and a traditional headdress called the Udeng.

As I returned to the hostel, the day’s encounters, from waterfalls to temples and cultural dressing, lingered in my thoughts. With a sense of anticipation for more explorations, I surrendered to an early sleep, eager for the adventures that awaited me on the morrow. Bali, a land of enchantment, had once again woven its magic into my travel narrative.
