Welcome to Sri Lanka, my haven of firsts in solo travel, where dreams seamlessly meld with reality. The allure of exploring the unseen world beckons, and I am armed with anticipation for thrilling adventures in the realm of independence.

For someone like me, who had never ventured beyond the comfort of school picnics, the decision to embark on a solo journey was a leap into the unknown. As I mulled over the safety precautions required for solo travel, a resolute spirit took over, unafraid of the storms ahead, for I was about to learn how to sail my own ship. Although I had never traveled alone before, not even for a school picnic due to stringent restrictions, the allure of wanderlust proved irresistible.

To kickstart this journey, I procured my Sri Lankan visa online, a symbolic step that cost me 60 Qatari riyals. My journey began from Qatar, where I had been residing, and landed in my hometown Chennai for a housewarming ceremony. Amidst the celebrations, my thoughts were fixated on my impending solo adventure.

“AS YOU TRAVEL SOLO, BEING TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF, IT’S INEVITABLE THAT YOU WILL DISCOVER JUST HOW CAPABLE YOU ARE!”

Amidst the excitement, I hadn’t even secured my return ticket from Chennai to Qatar, as my mind was preoccupied with the grandeur of my travel dreams. With my commitments in Chennai fulfilled, I found myself at the precipice of a thrilling risk – the risk of exploring different worlds.

On the 28th of September 2013, I booked my ticket to Colombo, Sri Lanka, for a 12-day escapade, followed by a four-day sojourn in the Maldives before circling back to Colombo and finally returning to Qatar for work. The first order of business upon landing at Colombo airport was securing a Sri Lankan SIM card to stay in touch with my family and relay updates.

Embracing the uncertainty of this first-time solo adventure, I took the phone number of a friendly face at the counter, providing reassurance that Sri Lanka is indeed a safe haven.

“SRILANKA IS A VERY SAFE PLACE AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING,” he confidently assured me.

With newfound courage and excitement, my solo journey through Sri Lanka was set to unfold, a testament to the magic that awaits those who dare to dream and embark on uncharted territories.

For starters, I’d been contemplating so much that, finally i had decided to go ahead with this trip . Thinking of safety preacautions to be taken to travel solo I wasn’t afraid of storms, for I was learning how to sail my ship! But I’ve had never ever traveled alone not even for a school picnic and was not allowed for any school trips. I’d purchased online Sri Lankan visa which cost around 60qatari riyals prior to my bookings. Then from Qatar, I landed in my hometown Chennai for my housewarming ceremony.
