As the sun set on the 19th of May 2017, I embarked on a journey that would defy expectations and redefine my understanding of the enchanting land of Slovenia. With a 12-day road trip planned, skeptics questioned the duration, wondering aloud what could possibly occupy my time for nearly two weeks in this picturesque country.

Undeterred by the naysayers, armed with determination and a meticulously researched itinerary, I landed at Ljubljana airport, ready to unravel the mysteries of Slovenia. The first order of business – securing wheels for the adventure ahead. Having skipped the pre-booking hassle, I approached the Budget car hire counter and struck a deal for a sleek Volkswagen Polo, setting the wheels of my expedition into motion.

Preparation is Key: Documents, Deposits, and Data

Before hitting the road, a traveler must be armed with essentials. A smooth car rental experience required the right documents and a credit card limit for the deposit. Equally crucial was obtaining a local SIM card, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the journey. With these prerequisites in place, I was poised to explore Slovenia’s hidden gems.

Unexpected Companions and a Shared Road Trip

Fate had an intriguing surprise in store. An invitation from a fellow Indian traveler in Delhi to share accommodations and the adventure unfolded. His offer to split the costs for the rental car and accommodations added a delightful twist to my solo road trip.

Navigating the city center of Ljubljana proved to be a challenge, especially finding parking near the hostel. The bustling streets offered limited options, but persistence paid off as I secured a spot near the Ljubljana bus station. Car parked, luggage in tow, I walked towards Hostel Tresor, ready for the next chapter of my Slovenian escapade.

Hostel Tresor: A Budget Oasis in the Heart of Ljubljana

Located in the car-free heart of the city, Hostel Tresor promised a budget-friendly haven. Its compact rooms with shared bathrooms didn’t offer the epitome of luxury, but the convenience of being steps away from Prešeren Square and the iconic Three Bridges made up for it. The former vaults turned dormitories added a touch of intimacy.

The shared facilities weren’t without their challenges, but the proximity to local attractions and the vibrant atmosphere compensated for any inconveniences. A local bus stop a stone’s throw away, Hostel Tresor was a strategic base for exploring Ljubljana’s treasures.

Refreshed and ready for exploration, my newfound travel companion and I strolled through Ljubljana, immersing ourselves in the beauty of the city. An Indian restaurant along the river boulevard became our dinner haven, adding a taste of familiarity to the Slovenian adventure.

As nightfall painted the sky, the adventure continued at Gig Bar Mala Ulica 5 for a pub crawl, promising to unravel the city’s nightlife. It was a perfect crescendo to the first day, setting the tone for the days of discovery that lay ahead.
